How to Avoid Dull, Generic Interiors & Make Your Home Truly Yours
A few years ago, every room we stepped into seemed to be another shade of grey. Today it might be beige, green or terracotta, but the risk is the same. When we follow trends too closely, our homes can start to lose their individuality.
When we’re designing our homes, I believe they should feel unmistakably yours. Personal, intuitive, and designed to support how you live every day. The most beautiful homes reflect and work for their owners, not just the latest algorithm.
It’s natural to be influenced by what we see online, but the key is knowing how to make it your own. Ask yourself: does this truly work for me, for my lifestyle, for this home? Good design begins with curiosity, understanding how you live, what you love, and how your space can support the rhythm of your daily life. The goal is to create a home that feels effortlessly yours, one that reflects your story and how you choose to live.
Colour and Texture
Colour and texture are two of the most powerful tools for bringing personality into a space. They set the tone, influence the mood and can create a sense of flow throughout a home. When used thoughtfully, they help connect each room while giving every space its own character.
Rather than starting with what’s trending, begin by thinking about how you want a room to feel. Is it warm and inviting, calm and restorative, or bright and energising? Consider how colour affects your mood and what atmosphere you want to create. Light also plays a huge part. What looks perfect on a screen or in another home may feel entirely different in your own space.
When we design, we think about what already exists in a client’s home and what they love. The colours that make them feel grounded, the materials that make sense for how they live. There’s little value in choosing a high-gloss dining table if it doesn’t suit family life, or heavy lined curtains in a coastal home. Texture, fabric and material choice should reflect both your personality and your practical needs. When those two align, a space naturally feels cohesive and beautifully personal.
Art That Tells Your Story
Art is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to express who you are. Whether it’s an investment piece, a print picked up on holiday or a photograph taken by someone you love, art gives a glimpse into your story. It doesn’t need to be expensive; it just needs to speak to you.
When we’re designing a space, we look at how artwork interacts with the room as a whole: its colours, textures, light and furniture. The right placement can shift the mood of a space, draw the eye or create a quiet moment of reflection.
We often help clients connect with galleries or specialists who can source pieces that feel personal and meaningful. The aim is never to fill walls for the sake of it, but to curate art that adds character and individuality. When chosen with intention, artwork grounds a space and helps it feel complete and authentically yours.
Mix and Layer for Depth
One of the easiest ways to bring character into a home is to mix things up a little. Rooms feel more interesting when they include pieces from different places and times, a handmade lamp on a marble console, a vintage chair beside a modern sofa. Those contrasts make a home feel lived in and loved rather than overly coordinated.
It can feel daunting to mix styles, and many people worry it will look messy, but the secret is in balance. Try to repeat a few tones or textures so that everything still feels connected.
You can also make a space feel more personal by adding something made just for you. It might be a table built to fit the space perfectly, a favourite chair re-covered in a new fabric, or bespoke shelving designed around how you live. These details make a home feel as though it has grown naturally over time, uniquely yours and never copied from a showroom.
Design That Reflects You
A beautiful home isn’t about following trends or recreating something seen online. It’s about translating your personality, lifestyle and story into the space you live in. Thoughtful design comes from intention, making decisions about layout, materials and furniture that feel right for you and how you use your home every day.
When I work with clients, I listen closely and stay curious. I want to understand what makes their home feel like home: the colours that calm or lift them, the textures they love, the things that tell their story. From there, the design grows naturally around them.
The goal isn’t perfection; it’s authenticity. A home that feels personal, comfortable and quietly beautiful. One that reflects who you are today and evolves gracefully as life changes.
